Modern Freemasonry traces itself to the formation of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717. That makes it nearly 300 years old. But the legends and customs of the Masons go back further. Legends of the operative masons can be traced back to documents from 1380, minutes of Scottish Lodges exist back to the 16th century, and the Templars (if the Templars are a Masonic influence) go back to the Crusades.
