North
The square and compass represent essentially the same thing to Mormons as they do to Masons. The square reminds Mormons to square their actions by virtue. The compass reminds Mormons to circumscribe their desires and passions within the bounds that the Lord has set.
Compass bearings - to the nearest 10 degrees.
The symbolism of a compass implies location and direction.
Have never seen that on any of my 1100's- I am a Freemason, and would have noticed that. By Freemason emblem, I am assuming you mean the square and compass marking- it could have been added after purchase by a Mason, or as a gift to a Mason. There are some unusual factory markings on Remington guns (including an anchor!) but have not seen square and compass.
Runways
He sees a snuffbox in his pocket, a tattoo of a fish on his wrist which could only be done in China and an "arc-and-compass" (an error for "square and compass") breastpin indicating his Masonic membership.
The points of a compass star represent the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. These directions help with navigation and orientation, providing a frame of reference for determining location and direction.
