If you consider all staff in a sleep-away camp (counselors, teachers, administration, foodservice, grounds & maintenance, and healthcare), the ratio can be surprising: between 2:1 and 3:1 camper-to-counselor. But depending on how you break down the staff, you'll get different results. For instance, campers-to-residential staff (cabin counselors) will probably be between 5:1 and 6:1 (except in special needs settings). Also, different camps can vary greatly in their staff sizes in specific areas: a camp that emphasizes a scratch-cooking foodservice might easily have twice the kitchen staff of a camp that relies on prepared foodservice products; this can really skew the ratio if these staff are included.
The whole summer. The movie would take too long to finish if they showed the WHOLE summer at camp.
It really just depends on the camp. I know the camp that I went to, Pali Adventures, had campers from 7-16!

A camp director is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of a camp, including planning programs, managing staff, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for campers. They handle administrative tasks such as budgeting, marketing, and compliance with regulations. Additionally, camp directors often engage with parents and the community to promote the camp's mission and vision. Their leadership is crucial in creating a positive experience for both campers and staff.
I got into camp management through a combination of my passion for outdoor education and my experience in organizing community events. After volunteering at a summer camp, I realized how rewarding it was to create enriching experiences for campers. This led me to pursue formal training in camp management and eventually accept a position where I could apply my skills in program development and team leadership. Over time, I developed a strong commitment to fostering a safe and engaging environment for campers and staff alike.
A Kanakuk Chief is a leadership role within the Kanakuk Kamps, a Christian summer camp organization based in Missouri. Chiefs are typically college-aged staff members who are responsible for leading and mentoring campers, facilitating activities, and fostering a positive, faith-based environment. They play a crucial role in shaping the camp experience by promoting teamwork, spiritual growth, and personal development among campers.
While not a special-needs camp, we (The Ballibay Camps) have had many campers with Asperger's Syndrome and campers on the Autism Spectrum over the years with great success. We consider this a happy accident of our program structure: we alternate great freedom with strict regularity. The meal times, cabin times, event time, and lesson times are to-the-minute; but the spaces between those activities are very open: campers can work in the art studios, email home, read a book, play games (chess is very popular), study lies for their play, or practice an instrument, or go to the pool. Since we have an outstanding staff-to-camper ratio (never worse than 1:3, and usually better), supervision of all campers is possible even though campers have such freedom in their schedules. I often tell parents that our camp has much more the feel of a college campus than a summer camp or school. This clearly appeals to our Asperger's and Autism Spectrum kids, and these children typically return to us for several or many summers (as do most children; we have an 80% return rate...). Please visit our websites, and contact us with any questions!

"Horse Camp" by Ursula K. Le Guin is a unique story about some campers going away to summer sleep-away camp. The interesting twist is that the campers are actually the horses! In this story, the main character, Norah, is a junior camper who discovers the freedom and adventure of summer camp, and looks forward to returning as a senior camper in years to come.
