The Girl Scout Slogan is "Do a Good Turn Daily." For GSUSA, it is a tradition that whenever a Girl Scout receives a membership pin, the pin is placed upside down until the Girl Scout does a "good deed" or "good turn".
Sometimes the Girl Scout is asked to do three good deeds, one for each part of the Girl Scout Promise. Sometimes she is asked to do a good deed each day until the next meeting. Once the Girl Scout has done her "good deed" or "good turn", she may turn the Girl Scout Membership Pin right side up.
There aren't any specific patches you have to have when you first start Girl Scouts. Your troop leader, adviser or guider should either purchase them for you or give you a list of the insignia you should buy. For Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), you might be asked to purchase the council identification patch and the troop numbers.
Boy Scouts were founded first.
Girl Scouts of America (GSA) is no longer an organization. Girl Scouts of America was founded in 1910 by Clara Lisetor-Lane and was unable to sustain membership and died out within a few years. The first GSUSA troop in the USA in 1912 was called 'Girl Guides of America'. In June of 1913, the name was changed to 'Girl Scouts of the US' (GSUS) and a headquarters was established in Washington, D.C. In 1915, the organization was incorporated as 'Girl Scouts, Inc.' under the laws of the District of Columbia. In 1950, 'Girl Scouts of the USA' (GSUSA)was re-incorporated under a Congressional Charter. You may join GSUSA by contacting your local Girl Scout council, filling out a membership form, paying your national membership dues, and sharing the Girl Scout Promise and Law. See the Related Link for a way to find your local Girl Scout council's website by entering your zip code.
The Boy Scouts were started before the Girls Scouts and most of the "lore" such as signs was already well developed even in the first handbooks so it would have to be that the Boy Scout's sign came before the Girl Scout's.

It is called an upside down cake because the topping is on the bottom of the cake as it bakes. For instance, when making a pineapple upside down cake, you put the pineapple slices in first, the strudel and then the cake batter. When it is finished, you flip it out with the bottom of the cake on top.
