They shared friendship, medical care, food, help during times of trouble, helped one another build buildings, helped with crops and animals, helped with birthing, worshipped together if they were not too far apart. They helped one another as they made the journey across the nation to their settled location. Often they had to police themselves when bad guys came around or when Indians were intent on getting rid of them. The helped each other with transportation and getting letters to the mail riders. Some had to help those who could not read and they educated children since they did not have schools.
