I have visited a number of churches in China and found them full to overflowing. In one case, the church service was being relayed by closed circuit television from the church building to an overflow congregation in the church hall, while others stood outside. The official newspaper of the Communist Party, Xinhua, has published articles about church buildings in China. While their numbers are small in relation to the total population, Christians are observable.
Underground churches with overseas affiliations also exist, and these are illegal because of long-standing Chinese sensitivities over foreign control, dating back to before the Boxer Rebellion.

Yes, China allows Christians to practice their religion, but the government strictly regulates religious activities and monitors religious organizations. There have been reports of persecution of Christians and restrictions on their gatherings in certain parts of the country.
