The first stage, in any survey, is to establish some kind of register - the "sampling frame" - for the whole population that you wish to study. The accuracy of this frame can greatly influence the reliability of the survey results.
The simplest method then is the simple random survey in which each member in the population is allocated a unique identifier. A suitable sample size is selected. Then a random number generating procedure is used to select identifiers until the required number are selected. This is the list of people who will be surveyed.
Although statistically this list is representative of the whole population, you may be unlucky and get too many people of one kind or another. Also, the variability in the responses may differ between different subsets of the population. To overcome this, pollsters use stratified random sampling.
In this scheme the total population is cross-classified into subsets, or strata, according to a number of criteria. For each criterion, people in the same subgroup should comprise of broadly similar people while people in different subgroups should be different. The stratifying criteria may be gender, age group, race, religion, educational attainment, income band or social group, political affiliations - in general any factor that is thought likely to affect the members' responses to the variable(s) of interest. Information on some of these factors may be available from the sampling frame. The rest would have to be established using preliminary profiling questions.
A simple stratified scheme would be to treat each cross-classified subgroup as a population and take a simple random sample representing the same proportion in each subgroup. A more sophisticated process would be to estimate the variability (standard error) of the response variable(s) in each substratum. Then the sample size within each substratum is selected so as to bring the standard errors as close to one another as possible. Again, a simple random sample is chosen from each sub-population.
Each stage in the process:
Pollsters typically use random sampling methods to select a subset of individuals from a larger population to participate in a survey. This helps ensure that the sample is representative of the population being studied. They may use techniques such as telephone surveys, online surveys, or in-person interviews to collect data.
Free surveys are very easy to find online. Try InstaGC, Free Paying Surveys, Survey Money Machine, or Free-Surveys for surveys that pay you for your information.
You can take free online surveys on websites such as SurveyMonkey, Google Forms, Typeform, and SurveyGizmo. These platforms offer a variety of survey creation tools and allow you to design and distribute surveys for free.
Surveys can be legitimate sources of information when conducted professionally and ethically. It's important to verify the credibility of the survey organizer, understand how the data will be used, and ensure your participation is voluntary. Be cautious of surveys that seem too good to be true or request sensitive information without a valid reason.
Some popular sites that allow users to complete paid surveys online include Swagbucks, Survey Junkie, and Vindale Research. Users can earn rewards or cash by sharing their opinions on various products and services through these platforms.

Of course it matters. Massachusetts has 11 electoral votes. Admittedly, experts and pollsters believe it is very solidly for Obama in 2012, but the people still have to go the polls and cast their votes.

No, but there was a headline that read: Dewey Defeats Truman, in the Chicago Tribune. There are links below. The story goes that the election results were slow coming in, and the editors wanted to go home, so they decided to approve the headline before the results were in. Part of the reason they were confident that Dewey would win is because the pollsters had said so. The pollsters had made use of a new technology, the telephone poll. Instead of asking people face to face as in the past, they decided that calling people would be far more efficient. What they failed to realize is that most people, particularly poor people did not have telephones. Consequently, the pollsters over sampled wealthier people who tended to skew towards the republican party, and the results of the polls proved to be inaccurate.

Most public opinion polls contact people through random digit dialing, online surveys, or mail surveys. Random digit dialing involves calling randomly selected phone numbers, while online surveys are sent to a targeted group via email or social media. Mail surveys are sent through the postal service to a selected sample of addresses.
