You must complete three years of probationary service before tenure is granted by a New York State public school or BOCES school. There are two provisions that reduce the required three-year probationary period for teachers in New York State public schools: * Prior tenure in a NYS school district or BOCES reduces the probationary period to two years. * Up to two years of full-time substitute/temporary service of a semester or more in the tenure area with the employing district, immediately prior to the probationary appointment, may be credited toward probation. A probationary period may be reduced by one of the above provisions but not both.
