The New Cornelia Tailings Dam is cited as one of the world's largest dams. It was not constructed but rather formed from the waste rock (tailings) from the local mine. It was closed in 1983.
Around 30,000 workers were employed during the peak construction period of the Three Gorges Dam project. Additionally, it involved engineers, technicians, and various professionals contributing to its construction over the years.

I've heard different answers. I've been on the tour, and the tour guide said it happens about once a year. I've read that the official number is about 20 since construction, but someone who worked there told me it happens about every other week - more during the holidays. my aunt commited suicide on the hoover dam in November of 1998. i have known of others that have as well... i believe it is around 112 people...and still counting
The project you are referring to is likely the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) in the United States during the 1930s. This initiative aimed to extend electricity to rural areas by providing low-cost loans for the construction of power plants and electrical infrastructure. It resulted in the electrification of thousands of rural homes and farmsteads, improving the quality of life for many people.
Dams can be found in both rural and urban areas. In rural areas, dams are often built for agricultural irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and water supply. In urban areas, dams may be constructed for flood control, reservoirs, recreational purposes, or to provide drinking water to the population.
The New Cornelia Tailings dam in Arizona was constructed in the late 1930s as a part of the mining operations in the area.

New Cornelia Tailings of Pima County, Arizona is one of the largest mine tailings piles in the world: 7.4 billion cubic feet, the New Cornelia Tailings is often cited as the largest dam structure in the country, by volume (the tailings, waste material from the mining process, were heaped into a pile that created a holding structure for future tailings, some of which were deposited in a pumped slurry, thus the tailings pile is an "impoundment" or dam). The mine that produced the tailings, the 1.5 mile wide open pit New Cornelia Mine, is owned by Phelps Dodge, and is presently in limbo (shut down in 1983). A project to mine the tailings has been proposed. The next in size is the Fort Peck Dam, 21,430 ft (6,531 m) long and 250 ft (76 m) high, on the Missouri River, NE Mont.; one of the world's largest earth-filled dams.

After Hoover Dam's construction was completed in 1936.
Grand Lake O' the Cherokees dam in Oklahoma is only 1568 mt long, Hirakud Dam in Orissa, India is the longest in the world. It is 26 km or 16 miles long. The Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands, build between 1927 and 1932, is 30 km long (32.5 km if you take the parts on land into account). It divides the Zuiderzee (now called IJsselmeer) and the Waddenzee so it is really a dam not a dijk.
Worlds Largest Dams: Do you mean in terms of dimensions or perhaps just height? or water held or power generated? * Itaipu Dam on the border of Brazil and Paraguay is the biggest dam in the world right now and has the largest power generators. * The largest complete structure is the Syncrude Tailings in Canada, at 540,000cu m or 706,320cu yards followed by Chapetn and Pati, both in Argentina, New Cornelia Tailings in the US is 4th at 209,500cu m or 274,026cu yards. * The highest dam is the Rogun in Tajikistan. But when completed in 2009: * Three Gorges Dam, in Hubei Province, China, will be the world's largest dam and largest concrete structure and create the largest lake. The dam will be built across the 3 Gorges section of the Yangtze River. It will be a 610-foot high wall running about 1.3 miles from bank to bank. Requiring 12 years and tens of thousands of workers to complete, the dam will cost $29 billion, and will create a 370 mile long lake, a distance equal to nearly half the length of California, that will be visible from Earth orbit.
