There are more names in the world then you could imagine. Any combination of letters (in any alphabet) or signs (e.g kanji, hiragana) could create a name in a specific language. Further, names can be identified by honorifics, titles, initials, numeration, suffixes (e.g. junior, elder), or residence, so that a single specific individual can be indicated. However, most family names and given names are not unique, so they are shared by others with no direct biological connection.

As it is possible for a person to have more than one name, the number of names is not limited to the number of people living, or the number who have lived.

Occasionally, individuals use pseudonyms, or stage names, or legally change their names (or the spelling) for a variety of reasons. These changes can be seen among many writers, film stars, and musical performers (e.g. Lewis Carroll, Dr. Seuss, Rock Hudson, Cher, Prince, LL Cool J, Eminem).
