I'm not sure what you mean by "degenerated," but I am guessing that you mean people who are poor or down on their luck, but you could also mean morally corrupt or sickly. I think one of the reasons that we see people that are different than we are as ugly is that they are different, and we don't really want to psychologically associate ourselves... so we start seeing them as the "other," and as unattractive. On the other hand, people that we get to know and truly love we see as attractive, even when other people rate them as unattractive. Personally, it seems like it is all about love and acceptance. Maybe it is for the way we think of ourselves as well. If we feel like we are good people, we might stand taller, take better care of ourselves, etc.
