Generally there are about 1500 soldiers who drop out of Basic Training, most of which do so because of fraudulent enlistment (concealing medical or moral issues), it has become much more difficult for someone to get kicked out of basic.

On average, about 15-20% of recruits drop out of army basic training each year. The reasons for dropping out can vary but common ones include physical injuries, failing to meet performance standards, and personal reasons. The military continuously works to improve training programs to reduce dropout rates.

How hard is it to drop out after starting basic training?

You can't really drop out. You have to make them not want you, and that's not to hard. Just openly defy them, walk away, or sit down when they are yelling at you. Urinate during formation. A week or two of that and you're on your way home.

What is the toughest branch in the military?

The USMC is currently the most difficult to get into. USMC basic training is arguably the hardest boot camp of all branches. Sorry dude, but SEAL training is ridiculously hard, and even though Marines definitely train like hell, SEALs take the cake. Also, surprisingly few people are actually kicked out SEAL training, the vast majority D.O.R. (drop on request) cause it's too hard. SEAL training is SPECIAL FORCES. Look at the answer: toughest BOOT CAMP (BASIC). No doubt SEAL training is the toughest but, for basic the CORPS is the toughest, even SEALS have to go through BASIC. I agree. The Marine boot camp is the toughest. *Comment from personal experiance. ;)
