Tourism

After an almost ten-year stagnation period (1984-1996), tourism has become again the spear-head of Polynesian economy in the past few years. The 80's saw the efforts of local persons in charge of tourism stagnate, with a number of annual visitors growing from 120, 000 in to only 160,000 in 1994. Today the Polynesian Government has taken charge to restructure the tourism organisation. Recent tax-sheltering laws have made it possible for this industry to start a welcome upturn. New hotels pop up on a regular basis. The creation of family-owned guest houses made it possible to not only increase tourism potential, but also to give jobs to many people in the islands. Cruise ships, such as the Paul Gauguin, made it possible for more than 60,000 tourists to discover Polynesia each year. Thus, many efforts have been made in this area and French Polynesia can claim today that it is on the upturn of a sustainable and measured tourism development. After 2000, more than 250,000 tourists have visited Tahiti and her islands each year, while income from tourism increased 53% between 1996 and 2000. Small hotels are mainly at the center of this revival to satisfy tourists who are more looking for contacts with the inhabitants, a great opportunity for exchanges and to take time to better soak up the local culture.
