Cultural enclaves are communities within a larger society that maintain their distinct cultural identity, often through strong social networks and shared customs, language, and traditions. These enclaves can provide a sense of belonging and support for individuals from the same cultural background.

A cultural enclave is when one cultural group (usually a minority) is completely surrounded by a very different cultural group. Some examples are the cities of Miao in central China, Assyrian settlements in northern Iraq and eastern Syria Pre-ISIL, Chinatowns in US cities, Desi neighborhoods in the UK, the Amish in Pennsylvania, etc. These can form either because a regional culture was slowly reduced to a small set of areas where a stronger and more dominant culture could not overrun them (such as Miao and Assyrian examples) or from an immigrant population that resists or finds difficulty with assimilation (such as the Chinatown and the Desi examples), or can form because a certain group of remote settlers are eventually circled by a predominant culture but refuse assimilation (such as the Amish example).
