There are a lot of advantages but some of the disadvatages after living here for 8 months are:
The language is difficult to learn; I the input will be greater than the output when you are studying
You will always be a foreigner among Chinese people
People may seem rude, even if it's not rude to them (pushing on the metro, pointing at your and talking about you while you walk down the street)
The businesses you work at (schools or otherwise) are not as employee friendly if you're coming from the west. The way business is done doesn't employees in decision making or how the organization is run
Again, there are a lot of advantages, but this short post is to point out the negatives.

i think that some of the disadvantages of an extended family are that you have no privacy at most times, a lot of conflicts and problems usually because someone is meddling in your stuff, the older generations doesn't agree with the younger generation and tries to force it belief on them, too much noise, you have to share everything you have, jealousy, and the person who earns the most pay has to do the most paying on bills,basic needs,groceries etc...
