There is evidence to suggest the spores fromed by bacteria such as Bacillus are much longer lived than previously thought. Strains of Bacillus held in the laboratories since well before 1900 can be germinated in minutes in a modern lab to give rise to fully functional Bacillus. In theory there is no upper time limit to how long these spores remain viable for.
