It is so named because Rouget De Lisle originally wrote it during the French Revolution for the entrance in Paris of the volunteers of the region of Marseille coming to the help of the struggling French Revolution. The inhabitants of Marseille are known as Marseillais (Masculine) and Marseillaise I Feminine). The title is La Marseillaisebecause it is a contraction of "La Marche Marseillaise". Marche being a feminine word in the French language.
