According the the Office of National Statistics 2009 Mid-year estimates (the most up to date), the population of the now defunct West Midlands Metropolitan County area (Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton) is 2,637,700.

According to the same statistic set, the population of the West Midlands Region (West Midlands Met County, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire) is 5,431,100.
