It depends on where you live. Take the time, on a day off, to make appointments with 3 recommended painters in your area. I stress RECOMMENDED. this will take all of about 3 hours, so you're not giving up your play time. Remember that the cheapest job isn't always the best neither is the most expensive. Be detailed in your questions: like how many are on your crew, who is my "go-to" man when you're not here (generally the owner isn't painting, they're out hustle the next job), does your estimate include materials (usually it does. you will also be charged for gas, the time it took to gather the materials and do the job), ask if it is a creative estimate and if so, historically how much more can you expect to pay over that ( make it a budgeting issue), how long will it take to complete, how do they intend to approach the job, daily what time can you expect them to start/finish, choose the brand of paint you want them to use but ask them what they like and why. Behr is okay paint but i have found, dries shinier than advertised. Personally, I like Ben Moore, Sherwin-williams, Pittsburgh. Make sure they are bonded/insured and ask to see proof of insurance (make this clear on the phone so there is no excuse for them not to have their info with them. Ask to see this first. if there is no proof, interview is over. Make sure that they leave you the paint they did not use. and make them responsible for the clean-up, removal and disposal of all the cans, rags, etc. You want to keep some paint for touch-ups, but if there are alot of unopened cans, make them responsible for the their over-sight and get re-embursed for the cost. Inspect their progress daily, and have a punch list of questions and/or wants . Don't wait until the last minute to complain. It's easier to correct or add a task while in the process ( i.e., if they're working on scaffolding (which, by the way, you will be charged a rental and set-up/breakdown fee for sometimes even if they own it, don't wait 'til it's down to point out something they'll have to set it back up for. This would be legitament grounds for an up-charge). Make sure you get all the receipts (or copies of them if they are including them in their estimate). That should get you started. Oh, you might want to ask if there is a client who would allow you to go and see the painters' work. I know this seems like more info than you asked for but these are some of the things that add up to creates your cost. Knowing about them makes you the smart consumer. Good luck with your project!
