My kids applied to 7 each. The general average is 5-8, give or take. (Unless you are applying to only in-state schools, which would knock it down to about 3-4) Most all universities have an application fee, which depending on where you're applying, can be pretty hefty, the average cost per application is between $35-$60 each.
