Disclaimer: I have no aviation knowledge. I'm just trying to figure out the exact same thing.

Well let's see. From London (LHR) to New York (JFK), it's a maximum of 8 hours with British Airways. According to geobytes.com[] the distance between the two cities is 5572km.
That's 696.5 km/h

pitfalls with my method:

  • Because of the Jet Stream, an eastbound flight is faster. My number is westbound.
  • The flight path is not actually straight.
  • Speaking of Jet Stream, according to this post[2] flight paths are adjusted daily to take advantage of/combat the Jet Stream.
Goddang thing doesn't seem to allow links even if I hack them in, so here they are:

What is the average speed of the QE2?

QE2's average speed (service speed) is 28.5 knots. A more interesting fact - however - is that the average speed over her entire 39 year service life - including time spent stationary in ports or when being refitted - was around 24 knots. This speed is actually faster than most cruise ships can achieve at maximum speed. The reason for QE2 having such a high speed is in order to be capable of maintaining a 5 night transatlantic crossing schedule - she needed 28 knots for that - but she needed more to 'catch up' if delayed, or caught in a storm etc.
