it allows us to do and not question the mindless routinisation of daily life. We do what is traditional simply because it has always been done. Customs indicate insiderrs and outsiders. People of a specific ethnic background respect customs because it shows how they are different from others. Rituals seem to involve less showing and hence confirms with some kind of arcana that we are members of a group. While it socialises us as members of a group, it also prevents us from leaving the group.
We identify ourselves with our customs, and know what it means to belong to an ethnicity. Individuals are less likely to give up their place in society since doing so would cause them to venture into the unknown alone. Rituals also show can indicate the individual's position within their community, leading them to act in ways that are expected of them.
This is my 2 cents, you might consider comparing traditional customs to modern customs, such as bureaucratic customs and rituals involving forms and such like.
I believe ultimately they exist to make us aware of our place in life, as well as preventing radical thought that leads to unnecessary change.
