January
Named after the Roman god of beginnings and endings Janus (the month Januarius).
February
The name comes either from the old-Italian god Februus or else from februa, signifying the festivals of purification celebrated in Rome during this month.
March
This is the first month of the Roman year. It is named after the Roman God of War, Mars.
April
Called Aprilis, from aperire, "to open". Possible because it is the month in which the buds begin to open.
May
The third month of the Roman calendar. The name probably comes from Maiesta, the Roman goddess of honor and reverence.
June
The fourth month was named in honor of Juno. However, the name might also come from iuniores (young men; juniors) as opposed to maiores (grown men; majors) for May, the two months being dedicated to young and old men.
July
It was the month in which Julius Caesar was born, and named Julius in his honor in 44 BC, the year of his assassination. Also called Quintilis (fifth month).
August
Originally this month was called Sextilis (from sextus, "six"), but the name was later changed in honor of the first of the Roman emperors, Augustus (because several fortunate events of his life occurred during this month).
September
The name comes from septem, "seven", as it was originally the seventh month of the year.
October
The name comes from octo, "eight", as it was originally the eighth month of the year.
November
The name comes from novem, "nine", as it was originally the ninth month of the year.
December
The name comes from decem, "ten", as it was originally the tenth month of the year.
The names of the months are derived from the names of the moths in the Roman calendar:
January (Ianuarius) - It was named from Janus, a Roman God with two heads.
February (Februarius) - from 'februum' (purification). It was named after the Februa/Februatio, a purification festival held from the 13th to the 15th of February.
March (Martius) - It was named after the god Mars.
April (Aprilis) - The origin of this name is unclear. It was probably derived from the word aperire (to open), probably as a reference to the trees and flowers beginning 'to open' in this spring month.
May (Maius) - It was named after the goddess Maia.
June (Junius) - It was named after the goddess Juno.
July (Julius) - The original name of this month was Quintilis (from quintus, 5th) and was the 5th month in the Romulean calendar. It was renamed Julius by Augustus in honour Julius Caesar.
August (Augustus) - The original name of this month was Sixtilis (from sextus, sixth) in the Romulean calendar. It was renamed Augustus in honour of Augustus, Roman Emperor.
September (Septembris) - from 'Septem' (7). It was the 7th month in the Romulean calendar.
October (Octobris) - from 'Octo' (8). It was the 8th month in the Romulean calendar.
November (Novembris) - from 'Nonem' (9). It was the 9th month in the Romulean calendar.
December (Decembris) - from 'Decem' (10). It was the 10th month in the Romulean calendar.
The first Roman calendar was said to have been created by Romulus, the founder and 1st king of Rome, and has been called the Romulean calendar. It only had 10 months and started in March, the month of Mars, the god of war and of the beginning of the military campaigning season. The second king, Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar and his calendar has been called the calendar of Numa. He added two months, January and February and put them before March. This is why September, October, November and December were called 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th, instead of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th.
The Roman calendar was reformed again by Julius Caesar. This has been called the Julian calendar. Augustus, Julius Caesar's successor, decided to change the name of quintilis into Julius and that of sixtilis into Augustus.
July (named after Julius Caesar) and August (named after Augustus Caesar) are the only months of the year that were named after historical figures.

The month of July is named after Julius Caesar and the month of August is named after Augustus Caesar.
The month of July is named after Julius Caesar and August is named after Caesar Augustus. They both changed the months and the amounts of days in them, giving us the calendar that our modern ones are based on.
The months of the Julian calendar are the months we use today. We use the Gregorian calendar, which is a slightly modified version of the Julian calendar. The month July is named after Julius Caesar. August is named after Augustus.
The change in the order of the months can be attributed to the adaptation of the Gregorian calendar. This calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to replace the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar reorganized the months to better align with the solar year and improve the accuracy of the calendar system.
