Ellis Island opened for the public on January 1, 1892, as an Immigration processing center in New York Harbor. It served as a gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the United States until it closed in 1954.

The Ellis Island immigration center opened Jan. 1, 1892. The original buildings were wooden and burned down in 1897. The new buildings were built using iron and brick and included a hospital, bath house, kitchen, dining room, and laundry building. The island was made larger with landfill.
