I was under the same impression, that New Yorkers were rude, until I went there for the first time in the summer.
For the most part, they were helpful and kind.
I will say that the service people, i.e. people who worked in stores with long lines were a bit blunt, but that was more out of necessity. For those of you who want to purchase anything in Manhattan, make up your mind, have your money ready and move on.
If you think people in NY are rude, go there and see that it's not the case at all.
