Basically, any characteristics or attributes that are different from the majority might be a reason for them to be made into outcasts. In the US Bible Belt, an Islamic person might be considered an outcast. In Saudi Arabia, a Christian would probably be. And that's just using religion as an example. Someone who has a larger-than-normal nose may become an outcast. Someone who is ugly or obese might not be accepted and therefore become an outcast. These are just some examples.
