Why do some people never marry?

It's nearly impossible to be objective with a question like this. The biggest reason I can think of is freedom. After all, where did "the old ball and chain" phrase come from? When people marry they are making a commitment to spend the rest of their lives caring for a spouse and possibly children. That is a pretty big responsibility to take on. Alot of people may be in this mindset when they are younger because they generally have a long time yet to live and want to enjoy life without having a weight to hold them back.

There are as many reasons as there are people who fit that category. Of the people that I personally know who are older people, never married, never had a pet, have the following profiles:

• A woman who has struggled with mental illness all of her adult life, always living in a small apartment due to low income.
• A man who was so ill treated as a child and teen, he claims that that he always feared how he would treat a family of his own, especially children.
• A woman who cared for her aging parents as their caregiver until their death in her late forties, has always had modest paying jobs and lives in a small apartment.
• A man who is gay and was raised in an era that it was necessary to keep this a closely guarded secret, he was never able to 'come out' even as society changed. He also always had a modest income and lived in small apartment. I don't know for sure that he never had a pet, I only met him when he was older.
• A woman in now in her late forties, lives in a small apartment and helps her unemployable, mentally ill brother take care of their mother who has been declining with dementia for a number of years.
• A man who lived in a monastary as a monk until his late forties; I've lost track of him now and don't know if he may have married.

There are people who just never meet the right person, and by the time they reach their forties or fifties, they get set in their ways both physically and emotionally. Except for the man stuck in the closet and the former monk, I believe that the others are or were reasonably satisfied with their lives, enjoy their friends, and have hopes and dreams for themselves that don't necessarily involve a partner. Speaking for myself, although I was married and raised my children, I've been single for over thirty years. Only the first ten years after my divorce was I interested in a possible remarriage. By that time, you are not only getting set in your ways but have had a chance to 'look over the field' and prefer not to make any more mistakes.
