Some people may want to look Caucasian due to societal pressures, beauty standards, and perceived advantages associated with being Caucasian in certain cultures. The desire to change physical appearance can also result from internalized racism and a lack of acceptance of one's natural features.

Why do so many whites want to get a tan when at the same time many discriminate against people with dark skin it sounds like a contradiction?

As the caucasian mom to 5 non-caucasian children, at times my kids have just wanted to look like me. As the one with the pasty face, I tan on occasian. I want to have the glow nature and evolution did not give me. I would not be discriminated against if I was tanned - I'm still a caucasian. Maybe one who develops skin cancer, but caucasian all the same. I would not be subjected to the potential racism that my children might endure based on skin colour. There's always the good old theory of always wanting what you don't have...
