On a national scale, sometimes doing the right thing is not necessarily the ethical or moral thing, and sometimes not the popular thing. An attorney that knows his client has committed a crime is covered under the attorney client privilege and may even face being disbarred if they were to reveal that crime.

Defending a child molester may not be popular but in the United States the legal system is set up so that everyone is entitled to a fair trial. Leaving an abusive spouse may not be popular, especially if no one knows about the abuse, but it is the right thing to do. Turning in someone that you know is breaking the law, returning lost money, even going to the dentist are all right choices, but not necessarily popular.
