Laminitis (also called thrush) is a disease that can cause a horse or any other hooved animal to become lame in the foot. Laminitis is when tissue dies in the inner wall, and allows the coffin bone to sink into the hoof. This is caused by leaving it in musty, wet bedding, not picking it's feet, or feeding it to much (causing the animal to become obese, putting pressure on the feet).
