Most likely, the old house built on the site of the Kleinfontein

farm, now in Bill Davey Drive, Lakeside. It was reported to have been built by Sir George Farrar

as his hunting lodge before the turn of the 20th Century and before the town of Benoni

was laid out by him in 1904. Any building in Benoni

therefore would be younger than the farm homesteads. Farm houses no doubt existed on the Modderfontein

and Vlakfontein

farms and until about 20 years ago the Vlakfontein

homestead foundations in Rynfield

were apparently still visible. Kleinfontein

was bought by Johan Hendrik Botha

from the Transvaal Republic Government in 1866.

Vlakfontein

was bought by the Nel

family in 1866.

Modderfontein

was bought by H.P.

van der

Walt around 1873.
