the old flag
to represent all states added
New stars were added to the American flag on July 4th of the year following their admission to the Union.
There were 15 stars on the flag until 1818 when it was changed to 20 to accounts for the states that had been added.
The US flag changed several times in the 1800s as more and more states joined the union. In 1818, the flag had 20 stars and 13 stripes. In 1819, the flag had 21 stars. In 1820 it had 23 stars, in 1822 it had 24 stars, and in 1896 it had 45 stars.
The flag developed over time. Francis Hopkins designed the first flag for the navy in1776 and Congress has recognized him as the designer ( not Ross). When the United States began there were 13 stars, but as states were added so were stars. The last two stars were added in 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii were added.
The stars on a flag often represent various symbols such as states, territories, or commonwealths in a country. In the case of the United States flag, the stars represent the states in the union. Each star symbolizes a state and the flag's design allows for stars to be added as new states join the country.
There is no true meaning to the blue on the American flag. Betsy Ross added the blue to make the stars brighter. The original flag was read and had red stars.
