Coal-fired thermal power plants are presently mainstream among newly-established thermal power plants in Japan. Improvement of operational characteristics with functions of following load demands and the reinforcement of environmental control measures are also required for coal fired thermal power plants. Hitachi, Ltd. has completed a unit that meets such requirements: the No. 1 unit of the Shinchi Power Station (power generation capacity: 1000 MW) of Soma Kyodo Power Company, Ltd. The unit has the world's largest production capacity as a sliding pressure operation coal-fired thermal power plant. High-efficiency combustion technology is used in the large-capacity sliding pressure operation of boiler unit, and state-of-the-art technology is incorporated in the high efficiency steam turbine. The unit was designed to be capable of advanced load operations, utilizing the most up-to-date environmental equipment. Trial operations carried out for about ten months starting in September 1993 confirmed that various design performance values were adequately satisfied. In July 1994, the world's largest sliding pressure coal-fired thermal power plant began commercial operation.
