St. Louis is named after King Louis IX of France, who reigned from 1226 to 1270. He was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, which is reflected in the city's name. The city was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, who chose the name to honor the king.
