To an extent, it does, depending on the context. If you identify as a particular gender, then gender is of some interest to you. It also depends on what aspect of gender we mean.

If we mean the body, then gender matters in terms of reproduction and the tendency to get certain diseases.

If we mean gender identity, then it matters to the person because they won't want to be treated as a gender other than what they believe they are, and they will want everyone to know how they want treated.

Gender role only matters to those who want to make it matter, since this is mostly society's rules about how people should dress and live based on their genitalia and nature.

There is also orientation, and while orientation is separate from gender, it ties in because orientation implies genders. If there were no genders, then there would be no such thing as same or opposite sex relationships. Bisexual and pansexual people obviously don't care, but the gender of a partner is important to gay guys, lesbians, and heterosexuals.
