Diarrhea is caused most often by an infection from certain viruses or bacteria.

Depends on the root cause and whether the condition is chronic (long standing) or acute and the age of the colt. Very young foals generally go through periods of diarrhea at about the same time as the mare is in foal heat. This is a normal consequence of the gastrointestinal tract "learning how to function". Stools will be loose and pasty at this time and a good covering of petroleum jelly or anhydrous lanolin on the baby's rump will prevent scalding. Scalding can result in temporary hair loss.

the new feed and the caretaker will have to evaluate if the rate of change is too rapid and be willing to slow the transition.

If the diarrhea is liquid, bloody, black, mucusy, accompanied by colic symptoms or smells abnormal the owner should contact a veterinarian immediately. Young horses have very few reserves and even an acute bout of liquid diarrhea can result in death due to dehydration.
