That is, to have your head cut off with your arms tied behind your back, sent the message that "we will end your life, the way the life of an animal is ended, not the way the life of a warrior is ended." If a Samurai behaved dishonorably, that was his punishment; he would not be allowed to take part in a battle where the odds against him are hopeless, that way he dies honorably, nor would he be allowed to commit sepuku. He would simply be hunched over, and have his head lopped off, as if he was an animal.
