How effective spam is and the ways you can stop spam?
There are several ways to stop spam:
1. Get a decent antivirus software. Many spam messages are caused by malicious software which captures your contact details. Make sure you regularly check for malware.
2.If you signed up for the spam(newsletters etc.) then unsubscribe by either contacting the sender or using the unsubscribe button in e-mails(if present).
3. Some e-mail providers allow you to block some senders. In Windows Live Hotmail, the Junk button allows you to delete the message and block the sender from your inbox.
4. Contact the company and ask them to stop.
5. If you are being harassed by the spam messages, you have a right to contact the police. Either e-mail or use the non-emergency number for your local police station, and inform them about the messages and who sent them. They will help you as much as possible.
Spam is not that effective, as many people delete the messages upon arrival. However, many children and the elderly are targeted by spam messages, as they do not comprehend the danger. They may unknowingly sign up for spam messages while filling out a form to win a prize, that probably doesn't exist.
What is the main purpose of spam?
The only 'purpose' of spam is to target a wide 'potential' customer base - whether they're interested in the product or not.

Answer:
Spam is a popular term for unsolicited, commercial e-mail. To be considered spam, e-mail generally needs to come from a source with which you do not have a previous personal or business relationship and to promote some product or service. It does not have to be part of a mass mailing to be considered spam, nor does it typically have a malicious attachment.
There are many proposals. Most involve charging to send email just as you are charged to send physical mail. Others involve a database of authorize mail servers and trashing or bouncing unwanted mail. Many email services provide an automatic filter designed to prevent spam from reaching users, which works to some degree.
Spam in other forms, such as on message boards or wikis (like WikiAnswers) can be discouraged in a number of ways, the most common of which is a suspension/ban policy for offenders. This acts as discouragement to users, as the prospect of being unable to use a service removes the temptation to spam/vandalise.
In some of the more extreme cases, blocking IP addresses is a technique that can be used to prevent offenders from accessing a service, so that they are unable to reoffend.

Is spam sometimes objectionable?
Spam by its very nature is objectionable. however the content of a lot of spam is downright ofensive.
Spam was [, unfortunately ,] created in 1937 by the Hormel Foods Corporation .
E-mail that is not requested. Also called "junk e-mail," "gray mail," "unsolicited commercial e-mail" (UCE) and "unsolicited bulk e-mail" (UBE), the term is both a noun (the e-mail message) and a verb (to send it). Spam is mostly used to advertise products and sometimes to broadcast political or social commentary.
The term was supposedly coined from a Monty Python comedy sketch in the early 1970s, in which every meal in a restaurant contained SPAM (Hormel's processed meat). The sketch came from World War II when SPAM was always available in England while other foods were rationed. Spam may also be an acronym for "sales promotional advertising mail" or "simultaneously posted advertising message."
