As they entered the driveway of his new foster home, he noticed a park nearby. They walked up to the door and were greeted by Lilian Catanze. They said hello and while Ms. Gold talked to Mrs. Catanze, David waited in the kitchen. When they were done, Lilian showed David his new room. When they went back to the kitchen there were two boys sitting at the table, Larry Junior and Big Larry. After being taunted by Larry Junior, Big Larry asked Lilian if David could go with him to the theater to see a movie. On the way to the show, David became best friends with Big Larry. In the theater, the movie had begun. David became captivated by the action of James Bond while Larry was interested in the girls in bikinis. They next day, Judy, Lilian's husband, packed up the car to take them to Junipero Serra Park, the old hill that his mother used to take him to. When they got there, there were many people there. They were all family, either relatives or former foster children who have been married and had kids or who have just moved out because of their age. When they got home Mrs. Catanze made David and her lunch. At one o'clock, there was a loud knock at the door. Lilian jumped up and answered it. David only stared as the door revealed his mother and his two brothers. He also spotted his bike that his Grandmother bought him. The bike was a mess, but David decided he wanted to fix it. When Big Larry came home from his job, he helped David come up with a plan to get money to fix his bike. David then bothered Mrs. Catanze until she gave him a chore for money. After a month he had saved up four dollars. Tony, Lilian's son, had driven him the next day to the bike shop to get it fixed. Tony knew what parts he needed and helped pay for what David couldn't afford. The next day as David recalls was named by his as, my day on my bike. He rode it for hours up and down the street. He had to be dragged in by Mrs. Catanze.

He also talks about how his teacher dealed with certain situations when he came to school scared, burned, and beaten. The final straw was when he came to school on March 5, 1973 with a huge swelling purple lump above his eye to her list. [ His mother had been bashing his head against the counter before school that morning] Then the nurse preformed a routine on david and asked him to take off his shirt. The nurse examined all his scars and bruises and other injuries. She noted the scar on davids stomach caused by his mother when she threatened him with a knife and had accidently slipped and stabbed him. She also noted the scar on his arm from where his mother had forced him to hold his limb over the flames of the gas stove. What the nurse didnt know was: David had been denied food by his mother for up to ten days at a time, that he had eaten from the dogs dish, ate dog poop, or ate from his little brothers dirty diaper. March 12, 1973 was Davids lucky day. He never went home again. He was put in a series of foster homes. Now David is a married parent of his eight year old son.

David hated the 'gas chamber' game the most. His mother filled the room with a mixture of Ammonia & Clorox, the gas was toxic, & David had much difficulty breathing, his eyes would tear, and he was very close to dieing.
