The story starts out with Jimmy Valentine being released from jail. Later he travels to Elmore where he meets Annabel, opens a shoe store, changes his name to Ralph D. Spencer and earns the respect of the community. Ralph is engaged to Annabel and him and her family go to the bank that Annabel's pa owns. They have just installed a new safe there and Mr. Adams (Annabel's pa) shows it to everyone. They stay and talk and then there are screams. It seems that the two children, May and Agatha were delighted by the shining metal and funny clank and knobs and May in a spirit of play shut Agatha in the vault. She then had shot the bolts and turned the knobs as she had seen her grandpa do.
