The aardvark (Orycteropus afer) is indigenous to the African continent. If the question is how non-Africans named it "aardvark" instead of how it was referred by African tribes, it may be because early Dutch settlers in South Africa(1650's-1800's) thought the animal resembled a domesticated pig with a snout that dug into the ground. In Dutch the word for ground is "aarde," and pig is "varken." Later, when the British began to colonize Africa (1870's), the translation into English dropped the "e" and "en" from the spelling.

Legal for what, hunting or owning as a pet? Either way it depends on where you're at and what the laws are there. I know some African tribes hunt them but it's possible it's illegal to kill one in a certain country but that's somewhat unlikely considering they're not endangered or anything. As far as keeping one as a pet goes, in the US you probably need a permit or something for keeping an exotic pet.

well, aardvarks have a variety of memory rememberances. at a young age, aardvarks have a very fuzzy memory and have issues remembering even those in their own pack! could you imagine if you couldn't remember your own family?!?!??! whoa. at the ripe age of 8 years, only 2 years away from certain death by predators due to a lack of knowledge and memory, aardvarks can finally recognize their surrounding and those inhabitting it!! so to conclude, it depends. its all really up to you to decide.
