The best place to get your accordion repaired is from your local accordion repairer if possible. This may not always be the case and so your next best option is to try and contact the manufacturer of your accordion. Whatever you do, do not attempt to repair your accordion yourself if you're not sufficiently qualified as you could damage your accordion more. It is important to understand a few basics of accordion repair and if you look after your accordion properly it will not need a lot of repair work.

The short answer: whatever someone is willing to pay for it! As a general rule, collectors pay more than players. It all depends on the cosmetic condition and uniqueness or scarcity of the model.

I've watched them for years on Ebay, selling for as little as $10 and as much as $250. NONE OF THESE BOXES HAVE BEEN REFURBISHED. A refurbished instrument would sell for more money, but most people do not believe they are worth restoring. I believe some of them are, because they play on par with Hohner products from the same era (I also prefer a stepped keyboard).

At auction, the average Koch 2-row diatonic in fair to good condition usually sells for $40 to $75 depending on its condition and how many people are bidding. Most Koch boxes I see are totally trashed from years of neglect so their value is basically as spare parts. But some Koch accordions featured ornate Shutz Marke cabinets and some had hand painted scenes on the cabinet, perhaps privately commissioned. If you have one of these in good condition, it might bring a little more money at auction but don't count on it by placing a high reserve or you will frighten away potential bidders. It's best to set a reasonable opening bid and let the market decide.

In my experience, Koch piano accordions are more rare than Koch button accordions. No Koch accordion is younger than 1929 because the company was absorbed by Hohner. Koch also built a limited number of instruments for the Montgomery & Ward department store, which were sold under the Concertone brand.

They are made of highly tempered steel giving them more flexibility and are riveted to a reed plate. They vibrate when air passes through the reeds to produce sound. The bellows allows your accordion to breathe and proper bellows control is essential in order to play this instrument well. Couplers also form an integral of every accordion and are used to change the quality of the sound.

The British inventor Wheatstone took the idea of free reeds from Chinese instruments (like the Sheng and Gusheng) brought back during the time of the British Empire half way through the 1800s. He transfered the bamboo free reeds into metal and with a bit of work invented the concertina and melodeon. It wasn't too long after this that the piano and button accordions were invented in Germany, although no-one's quite sure where or who.

Playing the accordion is an enjoyable experience and with proper tuition and practise it is very achievable. In order to play this instrument well, it is advisable that you book accordion lessons. Having an accordion tutor definitely speeds up the learning process as they would give you feedback on your good and bad points thus guiding you in the right direction. To start playing the accordion open the bellows straps, both top and bottom. Slide your right arm through the right-hand strap and your left arm through the bass strap. Press a button and pull the bellows outwards at the same time. Now press this same button again but push the bellows inwards. You will hear a different note is you are playing a diatonic accordion whereas chromatic accordions play the same note regardless of the bellows direction.

Bandoneons are similar to button accordions. Concertinas are similar to accordions, except they are smaller and each key only plays one individual note (as opposed to accordions which can also play chords). Other instruments in the same family include harmonicas and organs, but those instruments are not as similar to the accordion for obvious reasons.

Take some lessons to learn the correct method of playing this instrument. You may try to pick up some things on your own, like the keyboard for the right hand - similar to a piano, but the touch is quite different. The left hand must learn all the chord buttons, too - mainly by association.

Other instruments that are related to the accordion include the harmonica, the concertina, the melodeon, and the bandoneon.
