Accordions are members of the wind instrument family and consist of three major components such as the treble mechanism, bass mechanism and bellows. The right hand side consists of keys or buttons while the bass section varies depending on whether its a button or piano accordion. Piano accordions have a Stradella bass mechanism for the right hand side and this is standard for all piano accordions. Button accordions, such as chromatic accordions have a free bass mechanism, and are widely played in French musette. Diatonic accordions can have an eight or twelve bass layout and play different notes depending on the bellows direction. The piano accordion was invented when Bouton of Paris first applied piano keys to the accordion.

Yes, well in sound anyway. Both concertinas and accordions are members of the 'free-reed' family of instruments and as such have vaguely similar sounds. Most concertinas only use one reed per note, whereas most accordions use two or more and therefore come out with a different sound.

Both use bellows for expression, but with the concertina being so much smaller than an average accordion, it might be argued that the dynamics on a concertina are a little easier to control.

Registers are the switches that can be found next to the keys on the right hand side of the accordion. There are usually anywhere from 3 to 11 registers on an accordion. By switching registers, it changes the reeds that are used and thus changes the sound. For example, one register might sound like a clarinet and another might sound like a bassoon. Or you can have registers that are combinations of different registers. All of these produce different sounds and add more variety to the accordion.

Generally, there shouldn't be any need to tune an accordion. They do not go out of tune unless they have been damaged, for example, by cigarette smoke. Anyway, if you really do need to tune an accordion, you would have to get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. It would be a tedious task because each reed (represented by each separate key/button) has to be tuned separately. The way you tune it is by changing the length of the reed. A longer reed has a lower pitch and a shorter reed has a higher pitch. So if you wanted to tune an accordion up, you would have to shave down the reeds a little bit.
