Andromeda Galaxy

Is a galaxy bigger than a universe?

Not even close.

Actually, the size basically goes like this:

Planet (i.e., Earth)

Solar System (has multiple planets)

Galaxy (i.e., Milky Way, has billions of solar systems)

Universe (contains billions of galaxies)

It's been theorized that there may be a multi-verse, which contains multiple universes, and maybe even multiples of those, but nobody really knows yet.
Universe is bigger.

When will the Andromeda galaxy hit the Milky Way?

It won't "hit" but merge in about 4.5 billion years time - just about when our Sun starts turning into a red giant

Is the Andromeda galaxy going to collide with the Milky Way?

Wait about 2.5 billion years and you'll find out.

Such collisions are relatively common - called an Intergalactic collision. The Andromeda Galaxy or M31 [See related link - Andromeda galaxy] is believed to have collided with at least one other galaxy in the past. It is possible, that our Solar System might be ejected from the new galaxy during the collision. Such an event would have no adverse effect on the system and chances of any sort of disturbance to the Sun or planets themselves are remote. [See related link - Milky Way Galaxy]

Because of the vast "empty" space between stars, the two galaxies will more than likely merge into an Elliptical Galaxy [See related link - Elliptical galaxy] without any undue effect to the Sun or Earth. [See related link - Galactic collisions]

How far is the Andromeda Galaxy?

At the current estimates, the Andromeda Galaxy is about 2.54 million light years from us, and getting closer every year.

At that rate, it is expected to "merge" not "collide" in about 4.5 billion years.

Are there planets that life can be on in the Andromeda Galaxy?

The Andromeda Galaxy is the largest galaxy in the local cluster. This means that it contains more stars than the Milky Way and more stars mean more planets. Considering that scientist estimate that there could be thousands on planets with intelligent life in our own galaxy it would be logical to assume the same about the Andromeda Galaxy.

Where is the Andromeda Galaxy?

The Andromeda Galaxy (also known as Messier 31 or M31) sometimes as the Great AndromedaNebula is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light years away in the constellation Andromeda, and is 220,000 light-years in diameter, and contains 1 trillion stars.

Will earth be destroyed when the Andromeda galaxy collides with the milky way galaxy?

The collision of Andromeda with the Milky Way is not expected for many billions of years, by which time the Earth will have already been destroyed by the expansion of the sun into a red giant.

How did Edwin Hubble measure the distance to the Andromeda Galaxy?

He applied the period-luminosity relation to Cepheid variables.

What is happening to the distance between the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way?

We can tell the distance is decreasing because the light from Andromeda is blue shifted. That galaxy is closing in on us (or vice versa) 500,000 km (300,000 miles) per hour.

Who discovered the Andromeda galaxy?

The earliest recorded observation of the Andromeda Galaxy was in 964 CE by the Persian astronomer, Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi (Azophi) who described it as a "small cloud" in his Book of Fixed Stars.

Other star charts of that period have it labeled as the Little Cloud. The first description of the object based on telescopic observation was given by Simon Marius in 1612. Charles Messier catalogued it as object M31 in 1764 and incorrectly credited Marius as the discoverer, unaware of Al Sufi's earlier work.

How will the Andromeda galaxy affect the milky way in the near future?

The Andromeda galaxy is approaching us, and will be quite near in about 3 billion years. It is not yet known whether it will actually collide with our galaxy, or move sideways - the sideways part of the velocity is harder to figure out than the component of movement towards us, or away from us.

Is the milkyway closer then the Andromeda galaxy?

The Milky Way is the galaxy in which our solar system is located; you are inside the Milky Way; it's all around you. The Andromeda galaxy is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. The Milky Way is closer to us because we live inside of it.

How much gravity does the Andromeda galaxy have?

Not sure what you mean exactly. Its mass is estimated at 1.5 x 10 to the power 12 times the mass of the Sun. The force of gravity it exerts will, of course, depend on the distance.

Why don't star clusters form the characteristic swirl shape like galaxies usually do?

Galaxies don't always form swirl shapes, our large spiral galaxy is just one type of galaxy. And the spiral arms are actually an optical illusion caused by dense hydrogen clouds that block out the radiation from stellar nurseries in the spaces between the "fingers" or tentacles of the galaxy. Those apparently black, dead areas are actually where new stars are forming.

How did Edwin Hubble determine that the Great Galaxy in Andromeda is located beyond our galaxy?

Hubble realized that dimmer galaxies were probably farther away tha brighter galaxies. Thus, he tried to determine if there is a relation between the distances to galaxies and their red shifts. Using estimated distances based on relative brightness and the observed Doppler red shifts, Hubble discovered that galaxies that exhibit the greatest red shifts are the most distant.

How long will the Andromeda galaxy last?

About 17 billion years after the big bang , when it will merge with our own galaxy - the Milky Way. After that, a new name will have to be thought of, if anyone is still around.

currently andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away and moving toward us with a speed of 120 km per second

How many miles is it from Earth to the Andromeda Galaxy?

Andromeda galaxy is 1,974,973,990 light years from earth, source N.A.S.A. the second furthest star from Earth is 1,974,973,990 light years away.....

----------------------------- There are 5,878,499,814,186.5 miles traveled in a light year, (thats 5.8+ Trillion miles) the center of Andromeda is approx. 2.5 million light years away. The math is beyond me. If 2 steam engines leave their stations from earth 15 minutes apart when will they end up in Andromeda?????
