One round in the chamber, and (normally) 20 or 30 rounds in the magazine. However, there are magazines that hold 5, 10, 40, 45, 90, and 100 rounds of ammunition, each with varying degrees of reliability.

Is a colt ar15 legal to own?

Yes, unless you are a felon or live in California. California residents must purchase an authorized version of the weapon. The only difference is that the weapon does not have a detachable magazine (internal capacity 5 rounds). Another thing to be wary of is that for some reason people like to tamper with the AR15 to make it full auto. That is illegal, and to own one that has been tampered with will get you in big trouble with the BATF unless you purchased it through legal channels and have the weapon licensed to you.

What kind of bullet does the AR-15 use?

5.56x45mm NATO or .223 Remington. They are dimensionally similar rounds, but they are not the same.

Some AR-15 rifles have smaller throats than others. If it is too small, you'll only be able to fire .223 Remington ammunition in the firearm, as the area of the throat will be too small to accommodate the higher pressures generated by firing 5.56 NATO ammunition. If the throat is reamed properly, you should be able to fire both types of ammunition in the weapon.

There's no way to tell just by looking. If you try to fire 5.56 NATO ammunition in your AR and the primer pops out of the spent casing (in a best case scenario), get a 5.56 reamer (they're around $240). The reamer will widen the throat to accommodate the hotter 5.56 NATO ammunition.

Who makes the best AR-15?

"Best" is mostly a matter of opinion, but.....

Not long ago the answer would've been "Stick to the ABC's" (Armalite, Bushmaster, and Colt).

These days, with over 40 manufacturers making AR15's, M-4's, or simply lower receivers, it's very hard to say who makes "the best" AR anymore.

The "ABC's" are still a save bet, but many companies are cranking out exceptionally high quality AR's.

(Mark) LaRue makes an incredibly well-built receiver that's CNC machined out of solid 7075 aluminum. The trouble is - you have to pay a large premium,.. IF you can find one.

There are still Diamonds around (machined out of billet stainless steel). They're very precise, very strong, very expensive, and very hard to find though.

Someone else is still making a SS AR, but I can't remember who it is right now (DPMS maybe,.. not sure. I'll post when I find out).

JP Precision makes a complete AR now (made only precision replacement and competition parts until recently). Everything they make is top of the line stuff!

There are other high-end AR's out there (like MagPull), and the numbers are growing every day.
