In his Australian Open match, McEnroe received his first violation when he swore at a lineswomen. He was given a second warning when he destroyed a racquet on the court. Assuming he still had a third chance left, he decided to vent by verbally abusing the court umpire; under the new rules, however, the third offense resulted in his forfeiture of the match.
McEnroe's opponent, Pernfors, lost in his next round match against Yannick Noah, 3-6, 5-7, 2-6. It was his best result at the Australian Open.
