Why do babies like pacifiers?

Babies like pacifiers because of the natural instinct to suck the mother's nipple, which the pacifier resembles. This helps them calm down, as it activates the feeling of being cared for. This is also found in thumb-sucking, as the child's thumb is the best candidate to replace the nipple when there is no pacifier.

Does giving a baby pacifiers actually cause buck teeth?

I have heard that it does but I do not know if it is true. But there have also been studies showing that it can help prevent SIDS.

Another Answer:

A child who uses a pacifier too long and while the teeth are forming can have their teeth become "bucked". There have been children who were still using pacifiers at age three. They often have bucked teeth. It is wise to discontiue the use of the pacifier when the child discontines breast feeding or bottle feeding. Some parents use it to pacify crying rather than resolve the problem the child has at the time. This teaches the child that whining and fussing will result in a pacifier or food rather than having his or her parent/adult help or guide the child with their problem. Many children on pacifiers can speak. It is better to teach the child to explain as best as he or she can what is bothering him or her. The over use of pacifiers can cause distorted speech and leave the child needing speech therapy later in life. Have the child remove the pacifier when it wants to speak, do not interprate the child's speech around the pacifier, this way you will naturally correct the child's pronunciation if it is incorrect. It is ok to use pacifiers on newborns and small babies since they don't have their teeth in and often just need a little comfort.

Can pacifiers damage a baby's gums?

No. A pacifier is what it's named after "pacifier" and is much like suckeling their mother. The only time a pacifier can be harmful to a child is when they get their first teeth. Sucking on a pacifier can push the front teeth out forward in some cases. As long as it is clean and not dipped in anything a pacifier will do no harm whatsoever. All three of my children used one, the oldest until he was 4, they all have perfectly straight teeth and perfect diction. I used it only in the crib/bed or in the car at nap time after they were 6 months old.

What is the best way to get your 3-year-old off of his pacifier if cutting the ends off didn't work?

Don't use hot sauce. It is considered harmful, dangerous and abusive. It is best to stop the use of a pacifier once the first tooth has cut through. Continued use can cause some tooth and/or jaw problems. Pacifiers are not made with teeth in mind. You could try only offering it at bedtime or naptime. You could try throwing them all away. After a (shortish) while your child will be over his or her need to use the pacifier (but will probably find a substitute comforter like a thumb, doll, blanket or hair.) Try what seems best for you and if nothing works or you want more adivce talk to your child's peditrician. Throw them away. Throw them away Friday night and be prepared for the worst weekend ever. Take your child to the toy store and let him get a toy he loves. Let her know he can have it if he can give up his pacifier. Stress the differences between babies and big boys. Have your child find them all and toss em in the trash. Then give the toy. If he refuses, let him know it isn't optional and throw them away yourself. Sometime the next day when he is calm and not crying give him the toy. Be prepared for a much needier, unhappy child. The binkie is a form of security that protects them from their fears, anger, sadness, disappointment and other "bad" feelings. It helps them control them. You will have to take its place for a while and teach them to do it without the binkie.

Are there correlations between smoking and thumb-sucking or using a pacifier?

I wasn't able to stop smoking until I restarted my thumb sucking habit. This was when I was almost 12 years old (yes...I know...) and had been smoking since I was 8 after I stopped sucking my thumb shortly before.

Though it has changed the shape of my teeth (my uppers are far more forward than they used to be), and I'm now 18 years old, I think sucking my thumb is far better than smoking, in terms of health. I don't care what others think or do or stare about. It's my thumb and I'm not interfering with their space, so thumb's up...and in!

I know if I stopped sucking my thumb I'd start smoking again.

How do Adult babies suck a pacifier?

Adult babies typically suck a pacifier in a similar manner to infants, using their lips and tongue to create a seal around the nipple. They may find comfort in the act, engaging in a behavior that evokes feelings of security and nostalgia. This practice is often part of a larger lifestyle choice that emphasizes regression to a childlike state for emotional fulfillment. The way they use pacifiers can vary widely depending on personal preferences and the context of their adult baby role-play.
