What is the distance between second and home?

The distance of 90 feet (between home and first) is the distance of the middle of the plate and the middle of first base.

Can a fielder's choice result without an out taking place?

Yes. A fielder's choice is when a defensive player plays a ground ball and tries to throw out a runner other than the batter. A fielder's choice can be credited when no out is recorded on the play if the official score keeper determines that the batter would have been out if the play went directly to first. In this case it would be a Fielders Choice and the batter would not be credited with a hit.

What does the baseball statistic DP mean?

Dp means that you only bat (usually) or are only field. Usually a pitcher does not bat so they don't get hurt while batting and the DP replaces them.

How do you cover second base on a steal?

It depends, in little league, the shortstop is the rule. Usually, the shortstop will cover for a left handed hitter, and the second baseman will cover for a right handed hitter.

What is the minimum number of at bats to qualify for batting title?

Generally 400 but the amount has varied as the number of games played changes. For instance George Brett won the batting title with a .390 average in a strike shortened season. Nevertheless walks do not count, since they do not count as at bats. In the early 70s a player lost the batting crown with 399 at bats when 400 were required. This rule has changed however. Now, a player just short of the required at bats could ADD the number of hitless at bats (generally meaning walks) to the number of at bats which will permit the player to still win the batting crown as long as the average does not drop below the player just below him. ---- To win a batting title in MLB, a batter must have a minimum of 502 total plate appearences for the season. Yes, any at bat that results in a non-official at bat (walk, sacrifice, hit by pitch) counts towards the total number of plate appearances.

What is the lowest batting average for minimum number of plate appearances?

The dubious honor of the lowest batting average while still qualifying for the batting title belongs to Rob Deer. In 1991, playing for the Detroit Tigers, Deer batted .179 in 539 plate appearances.

Who decided to make the distance from the pitchers mound to home plate in the mlb?

The distance between the pitcher and home plate changed from 50 feet to 55 1/2 feet in 1887. At this time there was no mound but a box that was 6 feet long and 4 feet wide and the pitcher was required to keep his back foot anywhere on the back of the 4 foot wide box when he delivered. In 1893, the box was abolished and a mound was instituted where a 24 inch rubber plate that the pitcher was required to be touching with his back foot was located. This rubber plate was 60 1/2 feet away from home plate.

In 1887, the distance between the pitcher and home plate was moved from 50 feet to 55 1/2 feet but there was no mound. In 1893, the mound was introduced and the distance between the pitcher and home plate changed from 55 1/2 feet to 60 1/2 feet.

In baseball how many outs are there per inning?

Seriously if you are asking This you don't deserve to know but there are usually 3 but there can be more if the catcher drops the ball on a third strike(which is usually an out) if this happens you may run to first and if the catcher or other opposing player does not make the throw before you make it you are safe

Can a runner who missed a base go back a tag after another runner has scored?

A batter exiting the batter's box and running to first need not be tagged at all as a player on the opposing team needs only to tag the base while in possesion of the ball.

Does a right handed batter have to move when another player is stealing home plate?

if the batter can make contact then YES ... if the coach puts the hit and run on then YES ... if the runner is going to be gunned out then YES ... if the base runner is fast then NO ... if the coach tells you to lay off the pitch then NO ...

Strategic food for thought

Good points made above, however, something to think about when swinging when runner is stealing: PRO- holes open up as infielders are moving to cover the base(s) being stolen. CON- If you happen to "line-off" on the ball to an infielder, you will hit into an easy double or triple play ---- tigersy2k3

Does the pitcher need to touch the mound while pitching?

Rule 8.01 Legal Pitching Delivery goes into detail about the only two legal pitching positions (the set position and the wind-up) but the short answer is yes, not only must the pitcher be touching the mound, his foot must be touching the pitcher's plate (or rubber) until the ball is delivered to the batter.

What is the length of a preseason baseball game?

The average length of a spring training baseball game is nine innings. Most baseball games do not go over nine innings regardless of a tie.

Who decides the MLB disabled list?

Most Major League Baseball teams have Minor League Departments, where the Scouts are. Scouts will visit Triple A teams and High Schools. They take note of talented young players, and meet with other decision making front office personnel. The final decision usually comes from the team Manager, and President/Vice=President of the team. If a team has a 'single' owner, who wants the last say, then of course, this is the final decision.

Do you run on the third strike if first base is not occupied?

With 0 or 1 outs, the batter is automatically out. With 2 outs, the batter may attempt to reach first base safely.

In order to be called out automatically, first base must be occupied by a baserunner.

What is the throwing distance between 1st base and 3rd base?

You can find the distance between first and third on any baseball or softball field by using the following formula:

A squared plus B squared equals C squared.

A is the distance between home and first base

B is the distance between home and third base

C is the distance between first base and third base.

So, in MLB, where the distances between bases is 90 ft., it would be 127 feet 3 inches.

Is it possible to score a ground rule double?

Previous submitter's answer:

Yes. Only at Fenway Park in Boston. Fenway's Green Monster is the home of baseball's only in-play ladder, which extends from the upper-left corner of the old scoreboard to the top of The Wall. If the ball bounces off of that and out of play, the batter is awarded three bases.

Updated answer:

Actually, there is not - this is an urban legend. Here is the actual ground rule, from the Boston Red Sox's official website on mlb.com (copied here as Fair Use):

A ball striking the top of the scoreboard in left field in the ladder below top of wall and bounding out of the park is two bases.

(Source: http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ballpark/groundrules.jsp)

Interestingly, the term "ground rule double" as commonly used is itself a misnomer. A "ground rule" is a rule that applies at a specific ballpark - a rule for that "grounds". The ground rules at Fenway Park are different from those at Wrigley Field or any other ballpark. What is commonly called a "ground rule double" should be more properly called an "automatic double" if it applies at all ballparks universally.

Last night, August 13, 2010, Mets v. Phillies, Mike Hessman hit a ball that was called a home run on the field, but after a video review, he was awarded third base--possibly on the umpire's judgment that the ball would have bounced off off the fence and been umplayable until the hitter was on third--a ground rule triple--leading to the line, "Only the Mets could hit a home run and not score." They didn't score that inning, although the replays on-air seemed to indicate that even though the ball had been interferred with by a fan, it would have gone over the relevant orange line.

If a ground ball to the infield scores a runner when they throw to first to get the batter is it a sac for the batter?

This depends on the situation. If the fielder threw to get the runner out and the batter reached 1st due to this, then it would be considered a sacrafice by ruling it a Fielders Choice, and no hit or error would be charged. If the batter bunted and had good placement and was able to reach 1st due to a good bunt and beating the throw, then it would be considered a hit

If a player is walked is the ball considered a dead ball?

If a batted ball hits a base runner in fair territory before the ball has been touched by a defensive player or an umpire, the ball is dead, the runner is called out for interference, the batter is awarded first base, and all other runners advance one base if forced. If, however, the ball has been touched by a defensive player or an umpire before hitting the base runner, the ball is live and play proceeds as usual (unless the runner is judged by the umpire to have deliberately made contact with the ball, then the runner can be called out for interference, the ball is dead, the batter is awarded first base, and all other runners advance one base if forced, or, if flagrant, the batter can also be called out and no runners advance).

Can the umpire call a ball without a pitch being thrown?

No, the umpire can't call a strike or a ball until a pitch is thrown. There is no other play that uses those calls. An umpire can, however, walk the batter without a pitch being thrown if the pitcher attacks him. He can also advance a runner without a pitch being thrown if the pitcher balks.

An umpire can, indeed, call a "ball" prior to a pitch. This is part of the rule designed to prevent the "spitball." This is very specifically spelled out in MLB Rule 8.02a. The pitcher may not touch his hand to his mouth while inside the mound, apply any substance to the ball, deface the ball, spit on the ball or his hand, or rub the ball against anything. The penalty is that a ball is called.
