Pirates On Longest Losing Streak In History Buccos Lose 12 Games In Row

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are on their longest losing streak in modern history.

The record-tying loss came Tuesday night at home against the World Series champion Chicago White Sox.

They lost 4-2, which is the Bucs� 12th losing game in a row.

It ties the team's longest losing streak in the modern era.

The Pirates also lost 12 games in a row in 1914 and in 1939.

The longest losing streak in franchise history is 23 games.

That was in 1889 when the team was known as the Alleghenies.

So how much has changed since the last time the Pirates lost 12 games in a row?

In 1939, there were only 16 teams in the majors. Today there are 30.

And in 1939, people saw the first televised Major League Baseball game.

And the Pittsburgh Steelers were still known as the Pittsburgh Pirates

The longest losing streak in franchise history, (23 games) actually happened in 1890.

Began with a loss on August 12, 1890 ... and the twenty-third loss came on September 2, 1890. Losses number 20-21-22 all came on September 1, of 1890 -- that's right ... a triple-header!

On May 23, 1999, Brady Andersonbecame the most recent (and only AL player) to be hit twice in an inning (it happened in the first). Willard Schmidt of the Cincinnati Reds, Frank Thomas (not The Big Hurt, this one played for the early Mets) and Andres Galarraga have "accomplished" the feat in the National League.

Babe Ruth Oct. 6, 1926 hit (3) home runs in one world series game, then amazingly repeated this feat, hitting three more homers on October 9, 1928!

Reggie Jackson Oct.18, 1977 also hit (3) home runs in one world series game.

Ruth two feats came in the same place, St. Louis' Sportman's Park, a field that was the site of Mickey Mantle's second ever MLB homer on May 4, 1951. Apparently, this field wasn't built to hold Yankee batters because Mantle's homer (vs the St. Louis Browns) left the stadium entirely and landed across the street in a car dealer's lot!

B5 also hits an infield single but is unable to score. Bases loaded, 2 outs, 3 triples hit and 2 singles thus far. B6 hits a ground ball (or line drive) that strikes a baserunner. Baserunner is called out whereas batter is automatically credited with a single.

I won't say he was the best in history but Ed Kranepool of the New York Mets had a five year run as a pinch hitter that was a good as anybody in the game. Between 1974-1978, Kranepool went 57-144 for a pinch hitting batting average of .396.
