What was the highest score in High School basketball?

I can only speak for Missouri, but the highest combined score in a high school game was 243 between Central (126) and Vashon (117) on 2/1/80. The highest score by a single team in a single game was by Dixon High School that dropped 172 on Stoutland high on 12/2/68. Don't know how Missouri compares to the rest of the US.

How is foul play dealt with in sports?

Fouls are handled differently in every sport. Some can result in penalties.

How many guards are on a basketball team?

A team can have as many guards as they want. However, most teams aren't that dumb. Most teams have 2 of each position: point guard, shooting guard, power forward, small forward, and center. After that, a team usually has one more of each but that isn't alwasy the case. Usually, since a point guard and shooting guard are both considered guards, a team will have 4-7 guards.
In the NBA there are usually 2 players listed as guards on the court at any one time, although there are no restrictions by rule (all 5 players could be listed as guards or none could be guards)

In the NCAA many teams regularly use 3 guards, and some schools even use a 4 guard offense. This typically happens at smaller schools were it is difficult to attract talented larger players.

How much players on a basketball team?

There are 15 players allowed active on a basketball team, 5 start, and others come off the bench

How many shots do you take if you are fouled when shooting?

If the shot was unsuccessful, two if he was in the 2 points ratio or 3 if he was shooting for 3 points.

If the shot was successful, the player gets one free throw regardless of whether it was a 2 point or 3 point shot.

Can a player touch the ball and step out of bounds and come back in a gain possession of the ball?

Yes, if the player establishes himself in bounds by placing both feet inside the court. If one foot has not been re-established, then it is a violation of being out of bounds while collecting the ball, resulting in a turnover.

What do you mean by 3 second area in basketball?

The paint in the game is probably referring to the key and when you're offense you can't stay in the other team's key for more than three seconds or you're called.

The key is the rectangular section marked out with a black line in front of each net.

If the ball goes over the backboard in the NBA is it out of bounds?

The Ball is still in play. Back surface is the only out-of-bounds part of the backboard. (Supporting elements, such as pipes or poles or arms, etc. are obviously not part of the backboard or rim and are out of bounds.)

The ball traveling OVER the top of the backboard is OUT of bounds. I believe this rule was put in place because Wilt Chamberlain would score from the other side of the board.

Some sources say that if the backboard is 'fan shaped' or arched top, then the over-top rule does not apply, but does if the backboard is rectangle.

It's amazing to me how many times this happens at the gym and players call it out of bounds. Cmon! You gotta know the rules if you want to play the game. No one ever knows this rule, but here it is:

Rule 4, Section I - c. All five sides of the backboard (top, bottom, both sides and front face) are in play. As long as the shot stays on the top of the backboard, it is still in bounds. When it falls through the basket, the goal counts. But once the ball crosses over the backboard - regardless of where it comes to rest - it is out of bounds.

When can official college basketball practice begin?

The official regulation is 10' from the top of the rim to the floor in High School, College, and the Pros. In elementary school it is sometimes set to a lower level for these younger players but there is no official rule on this and it is left up to the administrators at that school.

Hoop to free through line?

Although measurements on a basketball court can vary according to the league and level of play, one distance is the same for all. The distance from the free throw line to the basket is 15 feet.

How far away is the 3 point line from the hoop?

The three-point line is generally an arc at a set radius from the basket. In international basketball, the three-point line is 6.25 meters (20 ft 6 in) from the basket. This distance is also used by most European leagues, as well as the WNBA. In the U.S., college and high school rules for both men and women specify a distance of 19 feet, 9 inches (6.02 m) from the basket. Recreational courts in the U.S., such as those at public parks, also commonly use this distance. This line lies at the same distance from the basket as the top of the key, so the 3 point line coincides with the top of the key at the center point. On May 3, 2007, the NCAA men's basketball rules committee passed a measure to extend the distance of the men's three-point line a foot back to 20 feet, 9 inches (6.32 m). The rule is subject to further approval by an NCAA oversight committee, which is considered likely by coaches and players. If the measure passes, the usage of the new 3-point line will begin with the 2008-09 season. The women's committee, however, decided to keep its line at 19 feet, 9 inches.[1] In the NBA, the three-point line is composed of 2 lines, parallel to and 3 feet (0.91 m) from the sideline, and a circular arc (centered on the basket) of roughly 120 degrees, which intersects the parallel lines.[2] The distance of the arc is 23 feet, 9 inches (7.23 m) from the basket. The distance from the line to the basket varies near the sidelines, and is exactly 22 feet (6.71 m) from the basket at its closest point which is 6 feet, 3 inches (1.91 m) from the base line, along an imaginary line parallel to the base line and through the center of the basket. The line is constructed in this fashion because if it were fixed at the arc distance, there would be very little room to stand inbounds near the baseline. The actual distance of the three-point line at any point along its straight lines can be computed trigonometrically, using the center of the basket and the 22-foot mark as the other 2 points of a right triangle. In order to attempt a three-pointer, a player's feet must be outside the three-point line. At the time of the shot or jump, the player may not be on the line or inside the line, or the basket is considered a two-point attempt; however, the player is allowed to jump from outside the line and land inside the line, as long as the ball is released in mid-air. A referee raises his arm to signal the shot attempt. If the attempt is successful, he raises his other arm and holds up three fingers in both hands to indicate the points scored. The referee must recognize it for it to count as three points. This has often been an issue of contention, as many games have been decided by a last-second three-pointer. In these extreme circumstances, referees have often conferred before deciding on how to rule the shot. Instant replay has sometimes been used, depending on league rules. If a shooter is fouled while attempting a three-pointer and subsequently misses the shot, the shooter is awarded three free-throw attempts. If a player completes a three-pointer while being fouled, the player is awarded one free-throw for a possible 4-point-play.

Is it true that you foul somebody in basketball behind the three point line do you get 3 shots?

You have a chance for a 4 point play. You go to the free throw line and see if you can make the 1 free throw shot you are rewarded for being fouled and still being able to score the 3 pointer.

Why does college basketball play two halves instead of four quarters?

A professional game consists of three periods of twenty minutes each, the clock running only when the puck is in play. The teams change ends for the second period, again for the third period, and again at the start of each overtime played. Recreational leagues and children's leagues often play shorter games, generally with three shorter periods of play.

Various procedures are used if a game is tied. In tournament play, as well as in the NHL playoffs, North Americans favor sudden death overtime, in which the teams continue to play twenty minute periods until a goal is scored. Up until the 1999-2000 season regular season NHL games were settled with a single five minute sudden death period with five players (plus a goalie) per side, with both teams awarded one point in the standings in the event of a tie. With a goal, the winning team would be awarded two points and the losing team none (just as if they had lost in regulation).

From 1999-2000 until 2003-04, the National Hockey League decided ties by playing a single five minute sudden death overtime period with each team having four players (plus a goalie) per side to "open-up" the game. In the event of a tie, each team would still receive one point in the standings but in the event of a victory the winning team would be awarded two points in the standings and the losing team one point. The idea was to discourage teams from playing for a tie since previously some teams might have preferred a tie and 1 point to risking a loss and zero points. The only exception to this rule is if a team opts to pull their goalie in exchange for an extra skater during overtime and is subsequently scored upon (an 'Empty Net' goal), in which case the losing team receives no points for the overtime loss.

International play and several North American professional leagues, including the NHL (in the regular season), now use an overtime period identical to that from 99-00 - 03-04 followed by a penalty shootout. If the score remains tied after an extra overtime period, the subsequent shootout consists of three players from each team taking penalty shots. After these six total shots, the team with the most goals is awarded the victory. If the score is still tied, the shootout then proceeds to a sudden death format. Regardless of the number of goals scored during the shootout by either team, the final score recorded will award the winning team one more goal than the score at the end of regulation time. In the NHL if a game is decided by a shootout the winning team is awarded two points in the standings and the losing team is awarded one point. Ties no longer occur in the NHL.
